The Bible moment
In 1 Samuel 17:23–30, David hears Goliath’s challenge while the Israelite army faces the Philistines. Goliath is the Philistine champion, and Saul and the Israelites are afraid. David learns about the king’s promised reward and is troubled that Goliath is defying the armies of the living God. Eliab questions David’s motives, but David continues speaking with others. This scene comes before David is brought to Saul and offers to face Goliath. The passage presents David’s concern as centered on honoring God, not on seeking personal attention. David is Jesse’s youngest son, a young shepherd who had come to check on his brothers and bring supplies from home.
