The Bible Story

David and Goliath

First Samuel 17:48-51 records the defeat of Goliath. David ran toward him, used his sling, and struck him with a stone. Goliath fell face down. David then took Goliath’s sword, killed him, and cut off his head. The Philistines fled when they saw their champion was dead. This passage presents David’s action within his earlier declaration that the battle belongs to the LORD. David had refused Saul’s armor because he could not move comfortably in it. He approached with his staff, a sling, and five smooth stones from the brook. The account does not say that the stone alone completed the defeat; it describes the stone strike followed by David’s use of Goliath’s sword. The scene should remain non-graphic and should not celebrate harm. Its focus is the LORD’s deliverance through David, an unexpected servant who acted in faith rather than relying on apparent strength or human weapons.
