Jesse Presents His Sons

1 Samuel 16:1-13

The Big Idea

God sees deeper than appearances. He knows each person’s heart and can choose someone others might overlook.

The Bible Story

David Is Anointed King

In 1 Samuel 16:8-10, Jesse presents his sons to Samuel. Seven more sons come before Samuel after Eliab, but the LORD does not choose any of them. Samuel then asks Jesse whether all his sons are present. This moment teaches that God’s choice is not based on outward appearance. People often notice what can be seen, but the LORD looks at the heart. The passage does not describe the unnamed brothers as bad, jealous, or mocking, and it does not give their occupations or personalities. Samuel is waiting for the son God has chosen, though that son has not yet arrived in this scene.

For families, church, and class

Use this page

Use this page before the scene where David arrives. Invite children to notice that the brothers are simply being presented, without adding motives or personalities the passage does not give. Emphasize that God’s choice is not explained by height or appearance, and avoid applying the story as permission to judge what is in another person’s heart.
