The Bible Story

David Spares Saul

In 1 Samuel 24:20–22, Saul recognizes that David will become king and asks David to promise that he will not destroy Saul’s descendants or wipe out his family name. David makes this serious oath. Saul then returns home, while David and his men go up to the stronghold. This follows David’s choice not to harm Saul when he had the opportunity. David refused revenge, respected the LORD’s authority, and asked the LORD to judge between them. The passage ends with David keeping peace and honoring his promise. It does not describe David becoming king in this scene or tell what happens later.
