The Bible moment
In 1 Kings 17:8–13, the LORD sends Elijah to Zarephath, where a widow has been commanded to provide for him. At the city gate, Elijah sees her gathering sticks and asks for a little water and a piece of bread. She explains that she has only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug, and that she is preparing a final meal for herself and her son. Elijah tells her not to be afraid and asks her to make a small cake for him first, then prepare something for herself and her son. The account presents the widow’s limited supplies gently and focuses on obedience, sharing, and care. Later in the passage, the LORD provides that the flour and oil do not run out until rain returns.
