Jesus Escapes to Egypt

Matthew 2:13 says that after the visitors depart, an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream. The angel warns him to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt because Herod the Great is seeking the child. Matthew 2:14 says Joseph gets up, takes the child and his mother, and leaves by night. The family remains in Egypt until Herod dies. Matthew connects this time with Scripture. Later, an angel again speaks to Joseph in a dream, directing him to return to Israel. Joseph then settles the family in Nazareth in Galilee. This account emphasizes God’s guidance through dreams, Joseph’s obedient response, and protection of the child. Matthew also reports Herod’s cruel order and the grief that followed, but this illustration focuses only on the warning and the family’s care.
