The Bible moment
Judges 7:9–15 tells how the LORD reassured Gideon before the attack on Midian. God told Gideon to go down against the camp, and allowed him to take Purah. Near the camp, Gideon heard a Midianite recount a dream about a barley loaf tumbling into the camp and overturning a tent. Another Midianite explained the dream as meaning that God had given Midian into Gideon’s hand. Gideon responded by worshiping God. Then he returned to the Israelite camp and encouraged the 300 men. This moment came after God had reduced Gideon’s force so Israel would not claim the victory because of its own strength or numbers. The dream did not replace obedience; it strengthened Gideon as he trusted God’s promise and prepared to act.
