The Bible moment
Judges 7:16–22 describes Gideon dividing the 300 into three companies and placing them around the Midianite camp at night. Each man carries a trumpet, an empty jar, and a torch inside the jar. At Gideon’s signal, they blow the trumpets, break the jars, and reveal the torches. The men cry out, and the LORD causes confusion in the camp. The Midianite army flees and turns against itself. This event follows God’s reduction of Israel’s force from 32,000 to 300 men, so Israel could not claim that its own numbers had won the victory. The passage names three companies but does not say that each company contained exactly 100 men.
