The Covenant Is Broken

Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

Worship belongs to the LORD, not to things people make. Wrong choices are serious, but honest repentance and prayer matter.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:19-20 describes Moses coming near the camp and seeing the golden calf and the dancing. His anger burns, and he throws the tablets from his hands, breaking them at the foot of the mountain. He then burns the calf, grinds it to powder, scatters it on water, and makes the Israelites drink it. The broken tablets are a visible sign of the Israelites’ covenant disobedience. This event follows their worship of the calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai. The passage presents Moses’ response firmly, without describing graphic harm or explaining additional consequences in this scene.
