The Golden Calf Is Made

Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

God wants faithful worship, not a replacement made by people. When we do wrong, we should take responsibility, turn back to God, and seek mercy.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:2–4 records Aaron telling the Israelites to remove their gold earrings. He receives the gold, forms it with a tool, and makes a golden calf. The people then say that these are their gods who brought them up from Egypt. Aaron builds an altar before the calf and announces a feast to the LORD. This is presented in the chapter as misplaced worship and covenant disobedience. The passage does not explain the calf’s artistic design or give a different intention for Aaron’s actions. The account belongs to the larger story of Israel’s sin, Moses’ intercession, God’s judgment, and God’s mercy. For children, explain that the Israelites were replacing faithful worship of the LORD with a visible image. Keep the focus on what the text says, without adding details about the object or the celebration.
