Exodus 32:1-35

The Big Idea

When others do wrong, we can care about them, pray for them, and remember that disobedience matters to God.

The Bible Story

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:11–14 describes Moses’ prayer after the Israelites made and worshiped a golden calf while he was on Mount Sinai. The LORD told Moses that the people had turned aside from the commanded way and spoke of judgment. Moses pleaded with the LORD not to destroy them. He appealed to God’s reputation among the Egyptians and to the promises God had made to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. The passage says that the LORD relented from the threatened disaster. This account presents covenant disobedience as serious while also showing Moses’ intercession for others and God’s mercy. It does not mean that Moses overruled God; the text simply records Moses’ appeal and the LORD’s response.
