The Bible Story

The Good Samaritan

In Luke 10:25–37, Jesus tells the parable of a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho who is attacked, beaten, and left half-dead. A priest and a Levite see him but pass by. A Samaritan sees him, has compassion, binds his wounds, pours on oil and wine, places him on his own animal, and brings him to an inn. He cares for the traveler and gives the innkeeper two denarii for continued care, promising to repay any additional cost. Jesus uses this story after a law expert asks who his neighbor is. The answer shows that a neighbor is someone who shows mercy through practical action. The passage does not explain why the priest or Levite passed by, and it gives no added background about the traveler, Samaritan, or innkeeper.
