The Bible moment
Genesis 32:22–23 tells how Jacob got up during the night and crossed the Jabbok stream with his two wives, two female servants, eleven children, and possessions. This scene is the beginning of an important account in Jacob’s life. After the crossing, Jacob was left alone. A man wrestled with him until daybreak, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint. Jacob asked for a blessing and received the name Israel because he had striven with God and with humans and had prevailed. Jacob named the place Peniel, saying that he had seen God face to face and yet his life had been spared. Later, as the sun rose, Jacob passed Penuel while limping. The account presents perseverance, blessing, a new name, an encounter with God, and lasting physical change.
