The Bible Story

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

John 3:16-18 belongs to Jesus’ nighttime conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews. In the continuing teaching, Jesus explains that God loved the world and gave his only Son so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. The passage says God sent the Son to save the world. It also contrasts belief with unbelief and judgment. These verses follow Jesus’ teaching about being born again, the Spirit, and the Son of Man. For children, explain that this is spiritual teaching, not a literal second birth. The passage presents God’s love, belief, salvation, and judgment carefully and seriously. It does not require adding a crucifixion, resurrection, later event, or imagined heavenly scene.
