The Bible Story

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

John 3:1-2 introduces Nicodemus as a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews who comes to Jesus at night. Nicodemus respectfully acknowledges that Jesus is a teacher who has come from God, because of the signs Jesus does. The passage does not identify those signs, so they should not be added to the scene. In the larger conversation, Jesus teaches about being born again, the work of the Spirit, faith in the Son of Man, God’s love for the world, salvation and judgment, and light and darkness. “Born again” is spiritual teaching, not a literal second birth. The passage presents a quiet conversation followed by continuing teaching. John 3:16-21 continues the discourse, though the speaker is not explicitly marked in every verse.
