The Bible Story

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

In John 4:31–38, the disciples encourage Jesus to eat after the Samaritan woman has gone into the city. Jesus explains that his food is to do the will of the One who sent him and complete his work. He then speaks about fields ready for harvest, a reaper receiving wages, and people gathering fruit for eternal life. Jesus describes both the sower and the reaper rejoicing together. The nearby fields help his disciples understand his teaching, but the passage presents harvest language as an image rather than a recorded farming event. This teaching follows Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman, in which he offers living water, reveals that he is the Messiah, and speaks about worshiping the Father in spirit and truth. Her testimony leads many Samaritans to come and hear Jesus.
