The Bible moment
John 4:7-9 tells how a Samaritan woman came to Jacob’s well to draw water. Jesus asked her for a drink, and she was surprised because Jews did not share things in common with Samaritans. The passage presents this as an unexpected conversation, while Jesus treats her with respect. This moment begins a longer exchange in which Jesus speaks about God’s gift and living water. Later in the story, he teaches about worshiping the Father in spirit and truth and reveals that he is the Messiah. The woman then tells people in her city about Jesus, and many Samaritans believe because of her testimony and because they hear Jesus’ words themselves.
