The Bible Story

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

John 2:19–21 records Jesus’ answer to the Jewish leaders: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The leaders understood him to mean the Temple building. John explains that Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body. This statement follows Jesus’ firm cleansing of the temple courts during Passover in Jerusalem. He had found sellers and money changers there, drove out the sheep and oxen, poured out coins, overturned tables, and told the dove sellers to take these things away. Jesus said, “Do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered Scripture about zeal for God’s house. When Jesus spoke about raising the temple, his words were not understood immediately. John later says that after Jesus was raised from the dead, the disciples remembered Jesus’ words and believed the Scripture and his word. The passage therefore shows Jesus’ authority, his deep concern for reverence in the temple, and the difference between what the leaders heard and what Jesus meant. Keep the explanation centered on the temple-body sign without adding details beyond John 2:19–21.
