The Bible Story

Jesus Walks on Water

Matthew 14:22-33 tells how Jesus sent his disciples ahead in a boat while he dismissed the crowds and went up a mountain by himself to pray. Late at night, the boat was far from land, and waves beat against it because the wind was against it. Jesus came toward the disciples walking on the sea. When they saw him, they were afraid and thought they saw a ghost. Jesus told them to take heart, identified himself, and told them not to be afraid. Peter then asked Jesus to command him to come, and Jesus called him. Peter walked toward Jesus on the water, but fear came when he noticed the strong wind. He began to sink and called for Jesus to save him. Jesus immediately took hold of him. When they entered the boat, the wind ceased, and the disciples worshiped Jesus, declaring that he was the Son of God.
