The Bible Story

Jesus Walks on Water

Matthew 14:22–33 tells how Jesus sent his disciples ahead in a boat and later came toward them walking on the sea. Peter asked Jesus to call him onto the water, and Jesus told him to come. Peter walked toward Jesus, but when he saw the strong wind, he became afraid and began to sink. Peter cried out for Jesus to save him. Jesus immediately reached out, took hold of Peter, and spoke to him about his little faith and doubt. This page focuses on that moment of rescue. It does not add details about how far Peter walked or how deeply he sank. The account continues with Jesus and Peter entering the boat, the wind ceasing, and the disciples worshiping Jesus and recognizing him as the Son of God.
