The Bible Story

Jonah and the Great Fish

In Jonah 3:1–4, the LORD again tells Jonah to go to Nineveh and announce its coming overthrow. Jonah obeys this time and enters the city. He tells the people that Nineveh will be overthrown in forty days. The warning is presented seriously, but this passage does not describe destruction taking place. The clear time marker helps children remember the exact warning Jonah announced. This moment comes after Jonah had run toward Tarshish, faced a storm, been cast into the sea, and been released by a great fish. God gives Jonah another opportunity to carry out the command. The focus here is Jonah’s obedience and the people hearing God’s warning through him.
