God Sends Jonah to Nineveh

Jonah 1–4

The Big Idea

God’s commands matter. We can ask God for help to obey, even when a task feels difficult.

The Bible Story

Jonah and the Great Fish

In Jonah 1:1–2, the LORD tells Jonah to go to Nineveh and cry out against its wickedness. This is the beginning of Jonah’s mission. The passage does not give a longer message here, so the scene should focus on God’s command and Nineveh as the destination. Jonah is the person receiving the instruction, and the LORD is the one sending him. Later in the account, Jonah does not obey at first and travels toward Tarshish from Joppa. The story continues with a storm, Jonah’s prayer, his release from a great fish, and his eventual journey to Nineveh. God’s command shows divine authority, while Jonah’s response introduces the theme of obedience. Families can also notice that God’s concern reaches beyond Jonah to the people of Nineveh. This illustration represents the first command only and should not add later events or a specific warning beyond what Jonah 1:1–2 states.

What children can notice

Jonah stands attentively as the LORD’s command sends him toward Nineveh. A simple distant view of the city helps children understand the mission without adding an invented message.
