Jonah Prays Inside the Great Fish

Jonah 1–4

The Big Idea

When we disobey, we can turn back to God, pray, and obey. God hears prayer and shows mercy to people who turn from evil.

The Bible Story

Jonah and the Great Fish

Jonah 1:17–2:10 records that the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah after he was thrown into the sea. Jonah remained inside the fish three days and three nights. In that place, Jonah prayed to the LORD from his distress, remembered God’s deliverance, gave thanks, and renewed his commitment to the LORD. The LORD then caused the fish to bring Jonah up onto dry land. This event follows Jonah’s disobedience: God had commanded him to go to Nineveh, but Jonah fled toward Tarshish. The fish was part of God’s authority over the sea and helped preserve Jonah’s life. Scripture calls it a great fish, so the illustration should not name a particular species or add details about injury or digestion.
