The Bible Story

Joseph Forgives His Brothers

Genesis 45:1–15 describes the moment Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers. He sends everyone else out, weeps loudly, and says, “I am Joseph.” The brothers are troubled and cannot answer at first. Joseph tells them not to be distressed or angry with themselves. He explains that God sent him ahead to preserve life during the famine. Joseph then embraces Benjamin and weeps with his brothers. This passage keeps the family together at Joseph’s residence in Egypt and centers on recognition, strong emotion, forgiveness, and comfort. Joseph does not say that the brothers’ earlier wrongdoing was good; instead, he explains God’s purpose in preserving life during the famine.
