The Bible Story

Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams

In Genesis 41:25–36, Joseph tells Pharaoh that the two dreams have one meaning, and that God is giving Pharaoh an answer. Seven years of great abundance will come throughout Egypt, followed by seven years when food will be scarce. Joseph advises Pharaoh to appoint a wise and discerning leader and to collect one-fifth of each harvest during the abundant years. The grain should be stored in cities so food will be available during the famine. Joseph does not claim that the interpretation comes from his own ability; he points to God’s help. At this moment, Pharaoh has not yet appointed Joseph. The passage focuses on the interpretation and the responsible plan that follows it.
