Joseph Gives God the Credit

Genesis 40:1–41:57

The Big Idea

When God gives us abilities or wisdom, we can thank Him and use those gifts to serve others rather than taking all the credit.

The Bible Story

Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams

In Genesis 41:14–24, Joseph is brought quickly from prison, prepared, and taken before Pharaoh. Pharaoh tells Joseph about his dreams of seven healthy cows followed by seven thin cows, and seven healthy ears of grain followed by seven thin, scorched ears. Joseph explains that he cannot interpret the dreams by himself. He says that God will give Pharaoh an answer, preserving the truth that interpretations come from God. Pharaoh’s servants are present as Joseph listens and responds with humility. This moment begins Joseph’s service before Pharaoh. The larger passage explains that the dreams point to seven years of great abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. Joseph later recommends collecting one-fifth of the harvest during the abundant years and storing it. Pharaoh approves the plan, appoints Joseph over Egypt, and Joseph oversees the grain collection. During the famine, people come to Egypt to buy food. The account highlights God’s gift of interpretation, faithful responsibility during hardship, wise preparation, God’s providence in Joseph’s rise to authority, and serving others through wise administration.
