The Bible Story

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

In Luke 15:1–7, Jesus tells a parable after tax collectors and sinners come near to hear Him, while Pharisees and scribes complain that He welcomes sinners. Jesus asks which shepherd with one hundred sheep would not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and search for the one that is lost until finding it. When the shepherd finds the sheep, he carries it on his shoulders, rejoicing. At home, he calls his friends and neighbors and asks them to rejoice because his lost sheep has been found. Jesus explains that heaven has more joy over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance. The parable shows God’s concern for the lost and the joy connected with repentance. It also teaches that one person matters greatly. The shepherd’s welcome gives a simple picture of sharing joy when someone who was lost is found.
