Luke 15:1-7

The Big Idea

Jesus’ parable shows that one person matters. Heaven rejoices when someone turns back to God.

The Bible Story

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

In Luke 15:1-7, Jesus tells this parable after tax collectors and sinners come near to hear Him, while Pharisees and scribes complain that He welcomes sinners and eats with them. Jesus asks which shepherd with one hundred sheep would not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until finding it. The shepherd’s search shows caring persistence. Jesus later explains that heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents, just as the shepherd rejoices when the lost sheep is found. The ninety-nine remain part of Jesus’ comparison and are not forgotten or unloved.
