The Bible Story

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

In Luke 15:1-7, Jesus tells a parable after tax collectors and sinners come near to hear Him, while Pharisees and scribes complain that He welcomes sinners. Jesus asks who would not leave ninety-nine sheep in the wilderness and search for one lost sheep until finding it. When the shepherd finds the sheep, he carries it on his shoulders rejoicing and invites friends and neighbors to rejoice. Jesus explains that heaven has more joy over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance. The parable shows God’s concern for the lost and the joy connected with repentance.
