The Bible Story

Paul and Silas Sing in Prison

Acts 16:25-28 tells what happened in Philippi at about midnight. After being beaten and imprisoned, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns while the other prisoners listened. A sudden great earthquake shook the prison’s foundations. The doors opened, and everyone’s bonds came loose. The jailer woke, saw the open doors, and assumed the prisoners had escaped. He was about to harm himself, but Paul called out that everyone was still there. This passage presents prayer and singing during hardship, God’s intervention, and Paul’s protective concern for the jailer. It does not explain why the prisoners remained, so no reason should be added.
