Bible moment
The Bible moment
Acts 16:25–28 tells what happened after Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns to God at midnight while the prisoners listened. A sudden great earthquake shook the prison foundations. The doors opened, and everyone’s bonds came loose. When the jailer woke and saw the doors open, he assumed the prisoners had escaped. Paul called out that everyone was still there. The passage does not explain why the prisoners remained, so no reason should be added. This moment belongs to the account of Paul and Silas in Philippi, where they had been beaten and placed in the inner prison. The earthquake is reported simply as a great shaking that opened doors and loosened bonds, without added destruction or frightening effects.

Use this page
Use this page when teaching Acts 16:25–40, especially prayer, courage, honesty, and care for others. Invite children to notice the open doors and loosened bonds, then explain that the Bible does not give a reason the prisoners stayed. Keep the earthquake gentle and avoid depicting self-harm, weapons, graphic injury, or a suspenseful escape.
