The Bible Story

Paul Survives a Shipwreck

Acts 27:27–32 describes the fourteenth night of the voyage toward Rome. The sailors sensed that land was near, took soundings, and lowered anchors. Then they tried to escape in a small boat, pretending to set more anchors from the front of the ship. Paul told Julius and the soldiers that the sailors needed to remain in the ship for the others to be saved. The soldiers then cut away the boat’s ropes. This moment belongs to the storm voyage and comes before the later shipwreck. The passage presents Paul as a prisoner whose warning is taken seriously, Julius as the officer responsible for those aboard, and the sailors as people attempting to leave during a crisis. The sailors do not escape in this scene. The account does not describe weapons being used against people, injuries, or drowning here.
