The Bible moment
Acts 27:39–44 describes the final moments of Paul’s voyage toward Rome under Roman guard. At daylight, the people aboard see a bay with a beach and try to bring the ship ashore. The ship strikes a place with two seas; its bow becomes stuck, while the stern breaks apart in the surf. The soldiers plan to kill the prisoners so none can escape, but Julius stops them because he wants to save Paul. He orders swimmers to reach land first and tells the others to follow on planks and pieces of the ship. Everyone aboard reaches land safely. This fulfills the message Paul had shared earlier: the ship would be lost, but the lives of all sailing with him would be preserved. The passage records 276 people aboard. It does not name the island, and this scene ends when everyone reaches shore.
