The Bible Story

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

Matthew 16:13–20 records Jesus asking his disciples who people say he is and who they themselves say he is. Simon Peter answers, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus blesses Simon and says that his Father in heaven revealed this to him. Jesus calls Simon Peter and speaks about building his church on this rock. He also gives Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven and speaks about what is bound or loosed on earth and in heaven. The passage ends with Jesus’ direct instruction to the disciples: they must not tell anyone that he is the Christ. This page focuses only on that instruction, not on its reason or on later events.
