The Bible Story

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Matthew 26:36–46 tells how Jesus comes with his disciples to Gethsemane and asks them to sit while he goes to pray. He takes Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and becomes sorrowful and troubled. Jesus asks them to remain and watch with him. He prays to his Father, asking that the cup might pass from him if possible, while submitting to his Father’s will. Three times Jesus prays. Each time he returns, he finds the disciples sleeping because they are tired. Jesus urges them to watch and pray, explaining that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. At the end of the passage, Jesus says the hour is near, his betrayer is approaching, and tells the disciples to rise and go. This account ends before the arrest and does not identify the betrayer by name.
