The Bible Story

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Luke 15:14–16 is part of Jesus’ parable about a father and his two sons. After the younger son leaves home and wastes his property in reckless living, everything is gone. Then a severe famine comes upon the distant country, and he becomes needy. He hires himself to a citizen of that country, who sends him into the fields to feed pigs. The younger son longs to eat the pigs’ food, but no one gives him anything. The passage presents his poverty and hunger plainly, without explaining more about the citizen, the country, or the food. This difficult situation becomes the setting for his recognition of need and his decision to return home in the next part of the parable.
