The Bible Story

Ruth Stays with Naomi

Ruth 1:19–22 tells how Naomi and Ruth arrive in Bethlehem after traveling from Moab. Naomi had left Bethlehem during a famine, but after her husband and sons died, she heard that the LORD had provided food for his people in Judah and began the journey home. Ruth chose to stay with Naomi, while Orpah returned to her people. When Naomi and Ruth reach Bethlehem, the town is stirred by their arrival. Naomi speaks honestly about her sorrow and asks to be called Mara because she feels her life has become bitter. The passage ends by noting that they arrive at the beginning of the barley harvest. The harvest marks the season of their return, but it does not erase Naomi’s grief.
