The Bible Story

Ruth Stays with Naomi

Ruth 1:19–22 tells how Naomi and Ruth returned to Bethlehem after leaving Moab. Naomi had experienced the deaths of her husband and her two sons, and Ruth had chosen to remain with her. When the women of Bethlehem saw them, the town was stirred. Naomi asked to be called Mara because she felt her life had become bitter. She said she had left full but returned empty. The passage ends by noting that Naomi and Ruth arrived at the beginning of the barley harvest. The scene holds both sorrow and a new beginning: Naomi is honest about her grief, while Ruth stays beside her. The women of Bethlehem notice their return, but the passage does not describe them as mocking or hostile. It also does not tell us what happens after this harvest begins.
