The Bible Story

Ruth Stays with Naomi

Ruth 1:19-22 tells how Naomi and Ruth traveled from Moab to Bethlehem. Their arrival stirred the town, and the women recognized Naomi. Naomi spoke honestly about her sorrow, asking to be called Mara because she felt that the Almighty had made her life bitter. She said she had left full but returned empty. Ruth remained with Naomi throughout this return. The passage ends by noting that they arrived at the beginning of the barley harvest. This account comes after a difficult time of family loss and a long journey. It shows Naomi’s grief without hiding it, while also showing Ruth’s steadfast companionship. The passage does not explain the causes of the deaths in Naomi’s family, and this scene does not include later events such as Boaz or gleaning.
