The Bible Story

Ruth Stays with Naomi

Ruth 1:1–22 tells how Naomi’s family left Bethlehem during a famine and settled in Moab. After Elimelech and later Naomi’s two sons died, Naomi heard that the LORD had provided food in Judah and began returning to Bethlehem with Ruth and Orpah. Naomi urged both women to return to their mothers and seek new homes. Orpah said goodbye and went back, but Ruth stayed with Naomi. Ruth promised to go where Naomi went, live where Naomi lived, share Naomi’s people, and remain with her in life and death. Naomi then stopped urging Ruth to leave. The passage presents Ruth’s loyalty as a freely chosen commitment and does not portray Orpah’s decision as wrong. Naomi and Ruth continued toward Bethlehem, arriving at the beginning of the barley harvest. Naomi carried deep grief and asked to be called Mara, but the two women arrived together.
