The Bible moment
Ruth 1:1–22 tells how Naomi’s family left Bethlehem during a famine and settled in Moab. After Elimelech and Naomi’s two sons died, Naomi heard that the LORD had provided food in Judah and decided to return to Bethlehem. Ruth and Orpah began the journey with her. Naomi encouraged them to return to their mothers and find new homes. Orpah said goodbye, but Ruth clung to Naomi and promised to go where Naomi went, live where Naomi lived, share Naomi’s people, and remain with her in life and death. Ruth also committed herself to Naomi’s God. Naomi stopped urging her to leave. Together they arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest. Naomi was still grieving and asked to be called Mara, but Ruth’s loyal companionship meant she did not return alone.
