The Bible Story

Ruth Gleans in Boaz’s Field

Ruth 2:17–18 describes what happened after Ruth gleaned in Boaz’s field. Gleaning meant gathering grain left behind after harvesting. Ruth worked until evening, beat out what she had gathered, and brought it into Bethlehem. The passage says she had gathered about an ephah of barley; it does not give a modern weight. Ruth also brought Naomi the food she had saved from the meal. This scene shows Ruth’s diligent work and her continuing care for Naomi. It follows Boaz’s kindness: he had told Ruth to remain with his female workers, provided water and food, and instructed the workers to leave grain available for her. Ruth was a Moabite woman and a foreigner who had returned to Bethlehem with Naomi. The passage presents her gathering grain respectfully, not stealing it. Naomi receives both the barley and the saved food. The wider chapter emphasizes loyalty and family care, kindness toward a vulnerable foreigner and widow, protection and generosity, diligent work, provision through gleaning, and respectful access to leftover grain.
