The Bible Story

Ruth Gleans in Boaz’s Field

Ruth 2:14–16 describes a meal during the barley harvest. Boaz invites Ruth, a Moabite woman and foreigner who has returned to Bethlehem with Naomi, to eat with the workers. He gives her roasted grain, and she eats until satisfied, with some left over. Boaz then tells the workers to let Ruth glean even among the sheaves and to pull out some grain for her without reproaching her. Gleaning means gathering grain left behind after harvesting. This scene shows protection, generosity, and respectful access to food for someone vulnerable. It belongs within Ruth 2:1–23, where Ruth is gathering grain in a field she happened to come to, a field belonging to Boaz, Naomi’s wealthy relative. The passage does not describe Ruth taking food secretly or explain a menu or seating arrangement.
