Bible moment
The Bible moment
Judges 16:1–3 says that Samson went to Gaza. At midnight, he got up, removed the city gate doors with their posts and bars, placed them on his shoulders, and carried them to the hill near Hebron. The passage presents this as a brief display of strength. It does not describe a battle, explain Samson’s motives in detail, or connect this event with Delilah’s later betrayal in the valley of Sorek. Samson’s strength is associated in the wider account with the LORD’s empowerment, yet the story does not approve every choice he made. This moment belongs within the larger account of a deliverer whose calling, dependence on God, impulsive decisions, and consequences all matter.
Look closely
What children can notice
A nighttime scene showing Samson carrying the removed doors, posts, and bars of Gaza’s city gate toward the hill near Hebron. The gate should be oversized and clearly separated from the city wall, presenting strength without celebrating Samson’s conduct.
Talk together
Talk about it
- What did Samson carry away from Gaza?
- Why should strength not be confused with doing what is right?

Invite children to notice what the passage says without turning the scene into a battle story or celebrating revenge.
