Samson Faces the Young Lion

Judges 13:1–16:31

The Big Idea

God can give strength for what he calls someone to do, but strength does not make every choice wise or right.

The Bible Story

Samson and Delilah

Judges 14:1–20 describes Samson’s journey toward Timnah, where he seeks a Philistine woman as his wife. Along the way, Samson comes to the vineyards of Timnah, and a young lion approaches him. The Spirit of the LORD comes upon Samson, and he tears the lion apart. This event shows that Samson’s unusual strength is connected with the LORD’s empowerment, not independent human ability. The passage continues with a wedding feast and a riddle. Samson’s wife presses him until he tells her the answer, and she reveals it to the feast’s companions. Samson responds in anger and strikes down thirty men at Ashkelon. This account includes broken trust, anger, and consequences. It does not present every choice Samson makes as good simply because he was chosen by God. The lion scene should therefore be explained carefully: God empowered Samson, while the larger story also shows Samson making impulsive choices that brought trouble.

For families, church, and class

Use this page

Use this page with older children when teaching Judges 13–16. Explain the lion encounter without graphic detail, and connect it to the larger themes of God’s empowerment, Samson’s calling, broken trust, anger, and consequences. Avoid presenting Samson as a perfect hero or treating his strength as magic. This concept works well for Sunday school, family Bible reading, classroom discussion, or homeschool lessons.
