The Big Idea

Faithfulness can be courageous, even under strong pressure. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego trusted God and refused to worship an idol.

The Bible Story

The Fiery Furnace

Daniel 3:19–23 describes the next step after Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to worship Nebuchadnezzar’s gold statue. The king becomes furious and orders the furnace heated seven times more than usual. He commands strong soldiers to bind the three men and throw them into the furnace. The men are still wearing their garments as they are brought forward. The passage reports that the fire kills the soldiers who approach, but it does not invite graphic description of their deaths. This moment shows the serious pressure placed on the three men because they would not serve the king’s gods or worship the statue. Their earlier answer had made clear that God could rescue them, yet they would remain faithful even if rescue did not happen. The story continues by describing the three men as entering the furnace bound, leading to Nebuchadnezzar’s astonishment when he later sees them unharmed.
