The Bible Story

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Daniel 6:14–18 describes the moment after King Darius learns that Daniel has continued praying despite the signed royal law. The king is greatly distressed and tries to rescue Daniel, but the officials remind him that the law cannot be changed. Daniel is brought to the lions’ den. A stone is placed over the entrance, and the king’s signet ring seals it. The king then returns to his residence, spends the night fasting, and goes without entertainment or sleep. This scene shows the danger Daniel faced and the king’s concern. It also prepares for the passage’s later resolution: at daybreak, Daniel is found alive and unharmed because he trusted in God, who protected him. The account highlights Daniel’s faithfulness to God under pressure, his steady prayer, and God’s sovereignty. It does not present Darius as eager for Daniel’s punishment, and it gives no reason to show violence or injury in this scene.
