The Bible Story

God Calls Abram

Genesis 12:1 says that the LORD told Abram to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s household and go to a land God would show him. The command does not name the destination at that moment. The next verses record God’s promises to make Abram a great nation, bless him, make his name great, and make him a blessing. God also says that all families of the earth will be blessed through Abram. Abram later goes as the LORD told him, traveling with Sarai, Lot, their possessions, and the people of their household. They set out for Canaan. The passage presents Abram responding to God’s call by leaving familiar surroundings and beginning the journey God placed before him.

What children can notice

Abram stands near his homeland and household as he respectfully listens to the LORD’s command to leave familiar surroundings and go toward a land God will show him.
