The Bible moment
In Genesis 12:1–5, the LORD tells Abram to leave his country, relatives, and father’s household and go to a land God will show him. God promises to make Abram a great nation, bless him, make his name great, and make him a blessing. God also says that all families of the earth will be blessed through Abram. Abram goes as the LORD told him. He leaves Haran with Sarai, his wife; Lot; their possessions; and the people who were part of his household. Together they set out for Canaan and arrive there. The passage gives Abram’s age as seventy-five. God’s command does not first name the destination, so children can notice that Abram obeyed while trusting God without knowing every detail ahead of time.
