The Bible Story

Jesus Ascends to Heaven

Acts 1:1-3 says that Jesus presented himself alive to the apostles after his suffering. Over forty days, he gave many convincing proofs and appeared to them while speaking about the kingdom of God. This passage does not name the locations or forms of those appearances, so the illustration should remain simple and careful. The wider passage explains that Jesus told the apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the Father’s promised gift, the Holy Spirit. He said they would receive power and be his witnesses from Jerusalem and beyond, to the ends of the earth. Jesus later blessed them and was taken up while they watched; a cloud hid him from their sight. Two men in white clothing then announced that Jesus would return in the same way they had seen him go. These events show Jesus alive, give the apostles a mission, and point them toward hope and faithful waiting.
